6,000 = # of Nortel Patents covering wireless technology up for auction
6 = # of bidders in Rockstar Bidco., individually known as Apple, Microsoft, Sony, RIM, EMC and Ericsson (patent auctions make strange bed fellows.)
$100 million = the amount that bidders had to bid above the previous bid in the final round.
$4.5 Billion = amount paid by Rockstar Bidco for patents
$750,000 = amount paid per patent.
1 loser = Google, who seemingly needed these patents to protect it’s Android phone.
1 winner = Nortel’s Creditors
Let the patent litigation games begin!
So the big winner may be patent lit attorneys. Speaking of Android, there’s a good article in a recent Fortune mag about how Google bought Android and turned it into what it is today (I just got a the droid Charge by Samsung, and it’s awesome).
I’m not sure patent litigation attorneys will win, if there’s an all out patent war between all of these technology giants. There might be the possibility for backlash if Apple gets too aggressive against Google.
